Ten Tips for Being More Truthful

Barbara A. Lewis

The 10 Tips
  1. Make a commitment to tell the truth.
  2. Tell someone about your commitment.
  3. Think before you give a dishonest answer.
I think this is just saying to think before you speak. It can also be saying think before you do. You don't ever want to be saying something that will make you look bad. Also you never want to say something that will make other people feel bad. Words can mean more than what people assume they do. Words can hurt people in many ways it may not seem like it but it does and is sometimes considered bullying. It may also cheer somebody up or make them feel even better. For the most always think before you say. Make sure you're not saying lies that can effect you or others. Lying is hard and very wrong it may not seem like it but it causes many problems. Always think before you say a lie that'll keep you from problems.

"For every good reason there is to lie, there is a better reason to tell the truth."
-Bo Bennett

4. Be careful of when and how you use exaggeration, sarcasm, or irony.

I think that this is very straight forward and it should be common sense to most people. Its just saying once again to think before you act. These are very simple you just have to get used to applying them. Don't ever go to far on the exaggeration, sarcasm or irony. Little things you say can have a big impact on people. It's fine to use it once in a while as long as you don't hurt others. Do your best to tell the truth. Lying will never get you far. Think before you say or do. Always be honest and pure.

5. Be careful not to twist the truth or leave out part of it.

This one is also simple but very different from the rest. It's something we do frequently and sometimes don't notice it. When tell something like a story or event or something that just happened we either leave out parts or add extra parts to make ourselves look better and more interesting. That's still considered a lie. Also can be how rumors get started. If you are going to say something say nothing but the whole truth or don't say it. It can later effect others or you or both. Lying is hard because you have to keep up with it and  try harder to cover it up. Its easier to just tell the truth. Lying is very bad and won't get you anywhere unless it later effects you and you feel bad or guilty. Always say the truth and never leave parts out its still lying.

Truth is, I'll never know all there is to know about you just as you will never know all there is to know about me. Humans are by nature too complicated to be understood fully. So, we can choose either to approach our fellow human beings with suspicion or to approach them with an open mind, a dash of optimism and a great deal of candour."
-Tom Hanks

6. Don't indulge in little white lies.

All of these 10 tips have been very simple so far and all are like common sense things. Once again even they're easy not to do most people do the wrong. In my opinion i think this is just saying to not be a part in little white lies. In other words don't encourage or say little lies. Little white lies are just lies that people think will never hurt or won't really matter. Also they can be little lies to prevent from hurting someones feelings. Never the less they are still lies. Lies should never be told. I honestly have a bad habit of lying. I wish I would only tell the truth or nothing at all. Lying is very bad and from personal experience even the smallest lies got me into big trouble. It's never good to lie even if its a small one.

7. Watch out for silent lies.

This one is a bit difficult since I've never heard of the term SILENT LIES. After doing research I now know what silent lies are. They are when physically or verbally you are agreeing with something but on the inside you know it's wrong and you want to say no or stop. They are called silent lies because you aren't really agreeing with what they are say. Speak whats on your mind.

8. When you catch yourself lying, throw your mouth into reserve.

I think this one is saying to just think before you say. Also if you are starting to lie and just realize it take it back and just be honest. Think abut what your saying say the whole truth never leave out parts or change them. Think before you lie. Its hard to say the truth but one may also say it's even harder to lie. You either say the whole truth or remain silent. Lies can hurt many people over and over. Lies can get you into trouble over and over. We all know lying is bad since we were little we've been told it's bad yet every body has done it multiple times. Telling the truth isn't the hard part. Getting rid of the habit of lying is the hard part. Stop your self before you lie. Don't be involve lies it can hurt you in the future.

"A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes."
Charles Spurgeon

9. Talk to yourself

Talk to yourself to practice better morals. Tell yourself whats wrong and whats right. You should know what's wrong and whats right keep yourself from lying. Always tell the truth. Talking to your self helps process feeling thoughts that are going to your head. Think of real life situations for this tip to be more effective. There isn't much to talk about with this tip since it is pretty straight forward. Think if it's wroth it or not what you say or don't say.

10. Treat yourself when you tell the truth

Reward yourself here and there when you know you've told the truth, the full truth. It sounds like a great way to start making it a habit. Don't do it all the time. Like once a day when you know you've gone the whole day without lying. Sometimes just knowing you've told the truth should be a reward. It's a very good feeling when you know you said the truth instead of a lie. Treating yourself for the time you've done great thing is very pleasant and good.

11. Reflection

In all honesty i think these 10 tips won't be very helpful and some of them are pretty much common sense tips . For me I don't think ill be able to tell the whole truth. I know it's bad but I'll try my hardest not to lie. If you use these tips they can and will be very beneficial to you in every day life. Being an honest person builds good character and morals. It also builds trust and better relationships with people. I have been applying talking to myself and it has prevented me lying a bit I think about impact or outcome I will have or end up with depending on what I say. I will try to incorporate the other tips which will help me later in life and right now. Being honest person means a lot you can go far with that and succeed in other ares as well.
